COC Protocol grooming refers to a grooming methodology built on the Closed-Open-Closed (COC) skin science framework developed by Dr. Cliff Faver. The protocol applies the biological requirements of the coat’s cuticle to the sequencing of every grooming product and step.

Shampoo opens the cuticle to clean. Conditioner closes and seals it to protect. These two functions must happen in sequence with separate products. Combining them into a 2-in-1 product prevents both from working correctly.

At Wags 2 Whiskers in Culver City, California, the Wellness Wash is a 23-step protocol built entirely on the COC methodology.

What Does COC Stand For?

Closed: the coat is assessed in its natural state before any product is applied.

Open: shampoo is applied to open the cuticle and clean the hair shaft. Cannot be combined with conditioning.

Closed: conditioner is applied after rinsing to close and seal the cuticle. Must follow shampoo separately.

Why Can’t Shampoo and Conditioner Be Combined?

Shampoo opens the coat’s cuticle. Conditioner closes it. These are chemically opposite functions. A 2-in-1 product attempts both simultaneously, so neither function completes. The coat is left neither properly cleaned nor properly sealed, and residue accumulates with every appointment that uses this approach.
